“Google Ads costs keep climbing and inquiries aren’t buyers” — before blaming the platform’s prices, hold on. Most of the time, the problem sits in your own account structure, landing pages and tracking. This article gives you three things to check, in order; that usually finds the answer.
See the cost structure firstCost per inquiry = click cost ÷ conversion rate — manage both ends
Many people watch only whether CPC is rising and ignore the other half of the formula:
Cost per inquiry = CPC ÷ landing-page conversion rate. A 20% CPC rise hurts, but conversion slipping from 2% to 1% doubles the cost outright — and that one is entirely on you.
Check 1: keywordsWhat you pay for decides the quality of the traffic
Read the search terms report, not the keywords report
The search terms report in your ad account shows what buyers actually typed before triggering your ads. On broad match, your ads may be triggered by floods of irrelevant, price-shopping and job-seeking terms — that’s where the money leaks.
Negative keywords: the most underrated money-saver
Add irrelevant search terms one by one as negative keywords: markets you don’t serve, product lines you don’t make, and no-intent terms like “free / used / repair”. Every negative keyword builds a dam around your budget.
Check 2: the landing pageTraffic isn’t the problem — what happens after landing is
- Does the first screen answer the buyer’s question — he searched “XX equipment lead time”; if the first screen is just a company profile, he leaves instantly;
- Are specs and datasheets visible/downloadable on the spot — B2B buyers want proof, not vibes;
- Is the form too long — with a dozen required fields, every extra one loses someone willing to ask;
- Does it open smoothly on mobile — a large share of first-time research happens on phones.
Check 3: conversion trackingWithout data, optimization is groping in the dark
If your account has no conversion tracking (inquiry form submits, WhatsApp clicks, email clicks), you’ll never know which keyword or which ad actually produces inquiries — optimization can’t even start, and budget grows on gut feel. Let the data speak before letting the budget flow.
Before blaming rising costs, check your own three things: are keywords dammed against leaks, is the landing page catching people, is conversion data being recorded. Sort those out and the cost curve usually falls on its own.
