Traffic but no inquiries? Breaking down the buyer decision path

YUCE Research Team · 2026-08~8 min read

Many exporters know this puzzle: decent website traffic, barely any inquiries. So they pour more into ads — more traffic, still no improvement. The problem is usually not traffic but that the site never caught the buyer’s decision process. This article takes that path apart.

Buyers don’t visit to learn about your company — they come to solve a problemThe first 30 seconds decide whether he stays

When overseas B2B buyers find you, they arrive holding specific questions: can this model substitute ours? What precision? Do you hold the certification we need? Lead time in weeks? Minimum order quantity?

Yet the first screen of many Chinese export sites is a factory photo and “founded in 1998”. With none of his questions answered, he leaves within seconds — and never tells you he came.

Breaking down the buyer’s decision pathA typical overseas industrial buyer decides in four stages

Discovery: who answers the question gets seen

Buyers arrive searching model, application and question keywords. Whoever’s content answers the question head-on enters his field of view — and note, at this point he’s looking for answers, not a supplier directory.

Research: comparing specs, circling the shortlist

Once noticed, buyers start to compare specs, study applications, download materials, narrowing dozens of suppliers into a shortlist. Suppliers without content assets — or with undownloadable materials — silently drop out here.

Screening: the list shrinks to two or three

Certifications, quality systems, capacity, lead times — the list shrinks to two or three. At this stage buyers look for “proof”: certificates, test reports, real application scenarios.

Contact: comparing reply speed and professionalism

Only then does the inquiry get sent. What buyers compare at this point is the speed and professionalism of your reply — the better the first three stages, the higher the quality of inquiries that reach this step.

Our public diagnostic sample shows European industrial buyers average ~7 online touchpoints, ~5 before contacting sales. Your site and content must do the work of the first three stages for your sales team.

Five self-test questionsCan’t answer three of them? Fix the site before adding budget

  • Within seconds on the first screen, can a buyer see “you can solve his problem”?
  • Are product-page specs complete, and can datasheets be downloaded directly?
  • Is there content organized by application scenario, not just listed by model?
  • Are certifications, quality systems and lead times explained crystal clear or not?
  • Does the form ask only for essentials — or make buyers fill in a dozen fields?
If you can’t answer three of the five, fix the site before adding budget. Traffic brings people to the door; the site decides whether they walk in.

Site structure should follow market researchLearn what buyers search before deciding what to build

This is exactly why we don’t take “just build the site” requests: first learn what buyers search, read and doubt at each stage, then decide how to build the site and arrange the content. Right order turns traffic into inquiries; wrong order, budget just brings more people to a door that won’t open.
